Ms. Tsakani Maluleke holds the record as the first woman to serve in a senior position in the office of the auditor-general in South Africa.

The Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee unanimously recommended her for the position of AG in October 2020.

She is well experienced in the ‘accountancy profession‘ and has worked for several organizations. Tsakani has worked for PwC and Eastern Cape Development Corporation.

Background

Tsakani grew up in Soshanguve, Pretoria, and then relocated to Johannesburg with her parents.

Her parents were into the retailing business and as a young girl, she worked at their shop.

She is the eldest of her four (4) children, her siblings include two (2) sisters and a brother. It is worth mentioning that Basani Maluleke is her younger sister.

She studied at St Andrew’s School for Girls in Senderwood, Johannesburg.

Tsakani attended the University of Cape Town, where she studied Bcom (Accounting). She had her graduation in 1996.

The following year, in 1997, she obtained a post-graduate diploma in accountancy.

She also is a post-graduate diploma holder in development and public management.

Tsakani is a chartered accountant, she is also a non-executive chairperson of SAICA.

She is a registered auditor and has been working in public and private areas for over twenty (20) years.

Tsakani is also experienced in several other fields. She is experienced in consulting, auditing, skills development.

She also has experience in investment management, development finance, and corporate advisory. 

She took home the 2018 BMF Black Excellence Leadership Award.

Career

On 20 October 2020, she was unanimously recommended by Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee on the appointment to the position of South Africa’s auditor-general.

In 2014, she occupied the position of South Africa’s deputy auditor-general and has served under the position to date.

In 2012, she joined the Office of the SA’s Auditor-General as the national leader for audit services. She was later appointed to the position of deputy AG.

She boasted as the first woman to occupy the position since 1911 when AGSA’s was formed.

She has been a member and has led several accounting boards and strategic committees.

Tsakani has a passion for transforming the accountancy profession in South Africa.

She also boasts as the ‘longest-serving acting CEO’, since November 2015.

She owns and is the chairperson of Lamontville Golden Arrows F.C.
