During the Nigerian Civil War, Emeagwali and his family fled to the eastern part of the country, and he was drafted into the Biafran army. After the war, Emeagwali moved to Lagos and continued his education at evening classes while working during the day. In 1974, Emeagwali won a scholarship to study in the United States. He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Oregon State University and went on to earn three other degrees, including a Ph.D. in Scientific Computing from the University of Michigan.
